All-new Mazda MX-5 is the evolution of an icon, enhancing the driving thrill that its predecessors are famous for. The latest generation of this iconic model reinforces its position as the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car with its improved power-to-weight ratio, handling, styling and technology. Put simply, the best just got better.
Innovative thinking makes all-new Mazda MX-5 such a unique car to drive. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese notion of Jinba Ittai – ‘horse and rider as one’ –the latest model has been engineered to help you forge a bond with all-new Mazda MX-5, the moment you settle behind the wheel.
The dynamic front-engine rear-wheel drive arrangement is enhanced by an energetic throttle response, and short throw six speed manual gearbox to convey confidence to drivers. 160ps SE-L and 160ps Sport models transfer power to the road via a limited slip differential for increased traction and also benefit from a front strut brace. Bilstein dampers, exclusive to the 160ps Sport model, also allow all-new Mazda MX-5 to tackle corners with even greater agility.
Underpinning all-new Mazda MX-5 is a lightweight, yet strong SKYACTIV-Body to keep the car nimble, and tips the scales at 100kg less than the previous generation. Its supreme rigidity offers stability when cornering at speed, and creates a strong safety cell around the driver and passenger in the event of a collision.
The weight savings offered by the SKYACTIV-Body have enabled Mazda to maintain the perfect 50:50 weight distribution, and achieve a lower centre of gravity which enhances the driving dynamics further. The outcome is pin-sharp handling that reacts quickly to each turn of the wheel and dip of the accelerator pedal.
Complementing the SKYACTIV-Body are two SKYACTIV-G petrol engines; the smaller unit is a 1.5-litre petrol that develops 131ps at 7,000 rpm and peak torque of 150Nm at 4,800 rpm. The 2.0-litre petrol suits those who want added muscle beneath the bonnet, with a power output of 160ps arriving slightly earlier in the rev range at 6,000 rpm. Both engines share the same six-speed manual transmission, and focus on delivering the ultimate driving enjoyment.
The larger powertrain can sprint from 0-62mph in just 7.3 seconds and carries on to a top speed of 133mph. Careful refinement makes each engine remarkably economical too. The 131ps engine returns up to 47.1mpg combined and emits just 139g/km of CO2.
The elegant exterior flows into an equally graceful interior which has been crafted to the highest quality standards, from SE-L grades the upper door trim matches the exterior body colour flowing elegantly over the door.
Throw back the roof and reveal Mazda’s unquestionable attention to detail. Premium cloth upholstery adorns the supportive seats in the entry-level SE model but an upgrade to the Sport variant swaps this for heated leather in Black or Sand Leather, which is also used to wrap the steering wheel and gear knob.
The cabin arrangement has also been carefully considered for how it can improve the driving experience. You sit low down in true motorsport fashion and can easily reach all of the functions without diverting your attention from the road. Meanwhile the instrument cluster is clear and uncluttered.
